Walk-in Showers (Curbed or Curbless)

Big tiles, wall niche and linear drain are features of this curbless shower.

When it comes to showers, you have a couple of choices, a walk-in shower, a wet bath (or curbless shower), or a more traditional bath/shower combination. Both curbed, and curbless showers are popular choices for modern bathrooms. They are practical as they address accessibility and mobility issues, though a curbless design makes it completely wheelchair accessible. Linear drains are used to help with water drainage and are sleek and modern in design. Adding a bench to a walk-in shower is a practical choice, as it’s a place to sit and can aid in showering as well as shaving your legs. The addition of grab bars is also helpful as it aids in stability and helps prevent falls. Glass shower doors create the illusion of a larger space and allow for continuous lighting in the room.

Bathtubs

Large bathrooms can accommodate a soaker tub and a curbless shower.

A bathtub/shower combination is still a popular choice and practical, particularly if you have small children and your home only has one full bathroom. Soaking or free-standing tubs are also a popular choice, especially for larger bathrooms that can also accommodate a walk-in shower.

Lighting

A 3-bulb vanity light fixture can provide sufficient light for an entire bathroom.

If there’s the opportunity to take advantage of natural light, do it, whether that’s by incorporating big windows or skylights. However, a combination of natural lighting and artificial lighting is ideal when remodeling a bathroom. It’s popular to have pot lights in the shower area, wall scones on either side of a mirror, or a vanity fixture centered above a mirror. Chandeliers are also an option, plus consider a dimmer switch so you can easily adjust the light for those relaxing baths. Track lighting or spotlighting can be effective for reading in the tub!

Heated Floors and Towel Racks

If you are doing a bathroom remodel, consider adding a heated floor. A heated floor is comfy on your toes, and you will save money, especially with a programmable thermostat. It’s also added value to your home. Heated towel racks are also an excellent addition. They not only make your bathing experience that much more luxurious by wrapping yourself with a warm towel after bathing, but they also help dry your towels quickly after use and cut down bacteria growth and that musty smell. Models come in both hardwired and plug-in versions.

Faucet Fixtures and Sinks

When installing a vessel sink it’s important to allow for the additional height of the sink to the overall height of the vanity.

Today’s choices are endless when it comes to faucet fixtures and sinks, and it can be overwhelming to make the final choice. Working with the ID design team will help you make the best decisions for your needs. Chrome is still a popular favorite as it goes with almost every decor and creates a classic modern feel. Chrome finishes also help to reflect light and create a brighter environment. In our recent projects, we’ve used both matte, and chrome finished fixtures. It comes down to personal preference.

Vessel sinks are trendy and pair nicely with a single-handled faucet. It’s important to note that when using a vessel sink, you need to make allowances for the height of the sink, so the vanity is not too high. Also, make sure the faucet you choose is specially designed for a vessel sink. Aerators also significantly reduce splashing.
