1. Refresh Your Walls with Paint
Painting a room is one of the easiest ways to give a space a whole new look and feel. It’s relatively inexpensive, and most people can tackle a small project on their own. Whether you paint the entire room or consider an accent wall, you can make a significant impact and totally transform a space.
Greys are still on-trend, and the colours for 2022 call for greys with green and blue undertones, bringing energy and warmth to any room.
Trends aside, choose colours and patterns that you connect with and bring you joy. If you are going for bold, remember they might not appeal to everyone, and you may need to go with a more neutral palette if you are considering selling your home in the future.
2. Wallpaper an Accent Wall to Create a Focal Point

Wallpaper is back in style, and the choices are endless. Popular trends now include 3-D designs, toile, tropical, abstract, botanical, and animal prints. Other popular designs are full wall murals with scenic landscapes or forests and with today’s printing technology, the sky’s the limit. Natural fibre wallpapers are also popular – made from wicker, grass, straw, linen, and silk. There is even removable wallpaper if you don’t want to make a long-term commitment, great for powder rooms or accent walls.

Maximize your vertical space with floor-to-ceiling shelves or cabinets and keep clutter out of sight.
Are you accumulating too many things and have rooms that are dumping grounds? If this sounds like you it could be time to do some organizing. Every home can make improvements with simple space-saving tips.
To maximize the storage space in a room, look for wasted space. Often this is in the form of vertical space, that’s why floor-to-ceiling shelves or cabinets are excellent for any area or closet. A series of floating shelves is another great idea for displaying objects and photos. Use decorative baskets to store items while keeping a uniform look. If space allows, consider adding one or more bookcases, a chest of drawers, or a wardrobe – all help to keep things organized and out of sight.
4. Furniture & Throw Pillows and Blankets
Give a room a fresh new vibe by switching out furniture pieces or decorative elements, like throw pillows and blankets. You can add a pop of colour with an accent chair in a living room, or bedroom. Layer throw pillows, or cozy blankets to complete the look. Neutrals will always be in style, but for a change, consider using a contrasting colour, pattern, or texture to complement your look, or use a colour from a piece of artwork for inspiration.

If painting is not an option, consider purchasing new artwork, wall sculpture, or mirror. Gallery walls provide impact and are a fun way to showcase family photos too.

Choose lighting pieces that will complement your colour palette, finishes, and overall design. No matter what your objective, style, or budget is, updating your lighting pieces is one of the most effective ways to change how your home feels.
7. Change Up Your Hardware or Fixtures
Swap out your current kitchen or bathroom fixtures and hardware. Today, there are so many more choices than the standard chrome finish, although it is timeless and works with any décor style. Consider brass, copper, nickel, gold-plated, or oil-rubbed metals, like bronze. Matte or shiny finish, smooth satin sheen, or textured finish are now available in all price ranges. You can even get faucets in bold colours like red and yellow for something fun and whimsical. Patterned ceramic or crystal knobs are another unique look. A word of caution – don’t get carried away by all the finishes, and I suggest don’t mix more than two different finishes or colours in one room. For example, if you are thinking of making your kitchen or bathroom sink a focal point, with a bright red faucet, continue this with red hardware throughout or perhaps a complementary colour like matte black or chrome or nickel.
8. Update Your Window Treatments
Window treatments, like Roman blinds and drapes, add a modern feel.
Adding new window treatments, curtains or even just changing your curtain rods can change up any room. Again, the colour and fabric choices are endless, from sheers to black-out curtains. You can also pair, your curtains with blinds or shades, like roman or roller blinds. Cellular shades with a honeycomb design have the added benefit of insulating your home from the cold and heat and filter light. California or Plantation shutters can give the room a bright and airy feel. The design ideas are limitless.
9. Change up Flooring
Change up flooring or tiles in an entranceway, like we recently did for a client. We replaced the dated black and white tile with a terracotta arabesque tile pattern, creating a bold new statement to the entranceway.
